Party Leader of the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) Justin Muturi, has claimed that the Executive is attempting to take control of The Nairobi Hospital through intimidation and sustained pressure on the hospital’s board of management.

Speaking during a press briefing, Muturi claimed the alleged effort to influence the leadership of the private medical facility has been ongoing for more than a year.

“Over the past one year, President William Ruto has through his Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei continued to sustain intimidation, blackmail and threats to the board of management,” Muturi claimed.

He alleged that the pressure has been applied either directly or through the hospital’s chairman, Dr Barkley Mogere Onyambu, whom he described as a consultant gynaecologist.

According to Muturi, who is the former Speaker of the National Assembly, members of the hospital’s board have been subjected to sustained threats aimed at forcing changes in the leadership of the institution.

“This intimidation has been directed either directly to board members or through the chairman, Dr Barkley Mogere Onyambu,” he claimed.

Muturi further claimed the alleged actions were part of a broader attempt by the State to gain control of the hospital, which is managed by the Kenya Hospital Association.

He added that the developments raise concerns over interference in the management of a private medical institution that has operated independently for decades.

“The Nairobi Hospital has served Kenyans for many years as a private institution run under the Kenya Hospital Association. Any attempt to intimidate its leadership threatens the independence of the institution,” he said.

Muturi further alleged that the pressure on the hospital’s leadership had involved the use of State agencies and investigations targeting members of the board.

He did not provide details of the alleged investigations but insisted that the actions amounted to harassment of individuals tasked with running the hospital.

The Nairobi Hospital, one of the country’s leading private healthcare institutions, has recently been at the centre of governance disputes involving its board and management.

The facility is operated by the Kenya Hospital Association, a non-profit organization that oversees its administration and strategic direction.

Muturi’s remarks add a political dimension to the ongoing wrangles surrounding the hospital’s leadership, with the Democratic Party leader calling for an end to what he described as attempts to interfere with the management of the institution.
