Kalonzo issues urgent safety alert as heavy rains persist across Kenya
NAIROBI, Kenya — Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has issued an urgent safety advisory as heavy rains continue to pound several parts of the country.
In a public statement on Thursday, Mr Musyoka urged Kenyans to remain vigilant, warning that the ongoing rains are expected to persist through Tuesday, March 24, with increased risk of flooding and landslides.
“I strongly urge every Kenyan to take this warning seriously,” Mr Musyoka said.
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, areas to be most affected include the Lake Victoria Basin, western Kenya, central highlands including Nairobi, southeastern lowlands, and the coastal region.
Authorities have warned of flash floods, river overflows and landslides, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
They caution that flooding may also occur in areas without heavy rainfall due to water flowing from upstream regions.
Safety measures urged:
- stay away from rivers, valleys and flood-prone areas
- avoid crossing flooded roads or low-lying bridges
- keep families informed and prepare emergency plans
- monitor updates from official weather channels
Mr Musyoka also called on Kenyans to look out for vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children and those living in high-risk areas.
The ongoing rains are part of Kenya’s March–May long rains season, which typically brings intense downpours and heightened flood risks across multiple regions.
“Your safety is paramount. Let us look out for one another,” Mr Musyoka said.
