Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has welcomed Pope Leo XIV to Africa as the Pontiff begins his first apostolic visit to the continent since assuming office.

In his message, Kalonzo said Kenya remains hopeful of hosting the Pope in future despite missing out on the current itinerary.

He also asked the Pontiff to pray for the country.

“I humbly beseech Your Holiness to intercede in prayer on our behalf, that Kenya may be blessed with lasting peace, social harmony, and leaders who govern for the common good,” he said.

First Africa tour as Pontiff

Pope Leo XIV is currently on his first visit to Africa since becoming the 267th leader of the Catholic Church.

The Vatican says the 11-day apostolic journey runs from April 13 to April 23, 2026.

It focuses on peacebuilding, governance, and strengthening interfaith relations across the continent.

The Pope began his tour in Algeria on April 13 where he met Church leaders and interfaith representatives during the opening leg.

The Vatican says the Algeria stop is aimed at strengthening dialogue between Christian and Muslim communities in a country that although largely Muslim, has a small historic Christian population.

Cameroon now hosting the Pope

The Pope is currently in Cameroon on the second leg of the tour and is expected to meet political, religious, and youth leaders during his stay.

Discussions are centred on governance, social justice, and peacebuilding.

The Vatican says the Pope will then travel to Angola before concluding his African tour in Equatorial Guinea on April 23, 2026.

Kenya is not part of the current papal schedule.

The last papal visit to Kenya was in November 2015 by Pope Francis who drew large crowds and focused on youth empowerment, peace, and inequality.
