At least 71 people have died in floods across Kenya, with Nairobi emerging as the hardest-hit region, the National Police Service (NPS) has said.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, police confirmed that five more people had died, as heavy rains continued to pound several parts of the country.

“NPS, in collaboration with all relevant partners, has continued to undertake arduous search and rescue operations across the country,” the statement said.

Nairobi accounts for 36 deaths, the highest number recorded in any region so far.

The Eastern region has reported 19 fatalities, while the Rift Valley has recorded eight deaths.

In Nyanza, four people have died, while the Coast region has reported three fatalities.

The Central region has one death.

Police said the tragedy was caused by sudden flash floods following heavy downpours that have swept through homes and settlements.

“Unfortunately, the cumulative number of fatalities has now risen to 71,” the police spokesperson said.

So far, about 2,622 families have been displaced, with many left without shelter, food, and other basic needs.

The floods have also caused widespread destruction of infrastructure and property across affected regions.

Search and rescue efforts remain ongoing, with emergency teams deployed nationwide.

“A high-level emergency response team from the NPS remains on high alert and is actively deployed on the ground,” the statement added.

With more rainfall expected, Kenyans have been urged to exercise caution.

“We urge members of the public to exercise extreme caution and vigilance, and to strictly adhere to updates and safety advisories,” police said.

The advisories have been issued alongside forecasts from the Kenya Meteorological Department warning of continued rains.
