Young people in Malindi, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Ukunda are being urged to apply for 2,000 job opportunities in Dubai, with the Kenyan government assuring full financial support and enhanced safety measures.
Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua announced that the Youth Fund will cover air tickets, medical examinations, service fees, and attestations for successful applicants. The available positions include motorcycle riders, construction helpers, and gardeners.
Interviews are scheduled from May 26 to 29 in the aforementioned towns. Officials from the Youth Fund, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Ministry of Labour will be present to assist applicants throughout the recruitment process.
Despite the opportunities, many Kenyan youths remain skeptical about overseas employment, particularly in the Middle East, due to past incidents of exploitation and abuse.
A recent Amnesty International report highlighted severe abuses faced by over 70 Kenyan women working as domestic workers in Saudi Arabia. One such case is that of Bigeni Maina Mwangi, who was promised a beautician job but ended up in unpaid domestic servitude for 17 months.
Another victim, Mejuma Shaban Ali, recounted escaping from her employer and receiving little support from the Kenyan Embassy.
In another incident, more than 40 Kenyans were stranded in Dubai after a local agent, who had collected Sh200,000 from each for non-existent jobs, abandoned them. The 16 who managed to return home, shared harrowing tales of desperation and suffering.
In response to these issues, the government has intensified efforts to regulate recruitment agencies. Recently, 32 agencies were blacklisted for illegal operations and fraudulent practices.
Labour CS Mutua emphasized that only agencies registered with the National Employment Authority (NEA) are authorized to conduct recruitment activities.
"We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens seeking employment abroad," said CS Mutua.
"By providing financial support and cracking down on rogue agencies, we aim to restore trust in overseas job opportunities."
The government's initiative to offer 2,000 job opportunities in Dubai, coupled with financial support and stringent measures against fraudulent agencies, presents a renewed effort to provide safe and legitimate employment for Kenyan youths. Interested applicants are encouraged to attend the interviews scheduled from May 26 to May 29, 2025 (Monday to Thursday) in Malindi, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Ukunda.
