NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) opened the 2026/2027 academic year placement portal this Tuesday, launching a limited window for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) graduates to secure government‑sponsored university and college placements.

The portal remains open until May 6, 2026, after which applications will not be accepted for this cycle.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba was briefed on the cycle’s status by KUCCPS officials, led by Board Chair Cyrus Gituai and CEO Dr Agnes Wahome.

Officials outlined preparations and advised students to complete their applications early to avoid last‑minute rushes and technical hitches on the portal.

New placement criteria and automated system

For the first time in the 2026/27 cycle, KUCCPS is using a revised placement criteria framework that includes automated, data‑driven matching of applicants to programmes based on performance and choices.

This overhaul is meant to manage rising competition and ensure allocations reflect merit and capacity across universities and colleges.

What students must do

Candidates are urged to log into the student portal with their KCSE index number and password to:

  • Select up to six preferred degree or diploma programmes.
  • Confirm minimum subject requirements and cluster cut‑off points for chosen courses.
  • Submit preferences before the May 6 deadline.

Incomplete or delayed submissions could result in missed opportunities, especially for competitive courses in fields such as engineering, health sciences and business.

Once the portal closes, KUCCPS will begin matching and notifying candidates of their placements.

Students should monitor their messages and the portal dashboard for updates, and seek support from KUCCPS help desks if they encounter login challenges or errors.

This placement window represents a pivotal step for thousands of secondary school leavers transitioning to higher education.

Strong preparation now could make the difference between getting a first‑choice programme and waiting for revision phases later.
