A police officer on Monday succumbed after he shot himself with a gun at Kiganjo National Police College Main Campus in Nyeri.
According to the police signal, Collins Imoni Onyando--a corporal--was on duty at the residence of the College’s Commandant when he walked out of the gate and blew himself off at around 3am on Monday.
The officer was on third shift duty jointly with constable Moses Lesamito, when he walked out at the residence at around 2am and later opted to shoot himself below the chin. The bullet exited on the head.
“…..at around 0200 hrs, he left his colleague and went to stay outside the residence. At around 0300 hrs, Pc Moses Lesamito heard a sound but he thought it was a motorcycle burst from the nearest Nyeri road,” read the police signal in part.
Mr Onyando’s body was recovered by corporal Felista Bosire at around 5:30 AM when she reported at the residence for the next shift.
“……and at around 0530 hrs, Cpl Felista Bosire who was reporting on duty to relieve the officers noticed the lifeless body of the deceased lying about 40 meters from residence gate,” the police signal stated.
When the scene was processed, a CZ 807 rifle which was loaded with a magazine of 29 rounds of ammunition was found near his feet and a spent cartridge recovered.
The incident was reported at Kiganjo Police Station by officers Lesamito and Bosire.
Investigations into the matter are still ongoing by a team of detectives.
