Likoni MP Mishi Mboko has formally sought a statement from the Departmental Committee on Transport, Public Works and Housing regarding the persistent challenges at the Likoni ferry crossing in Mombasa.

While seeking the statement in Parliament, the MP wanted to know:

What measures the government is taking to resolve the shortage of ferries, particularly during peak hours;

What is being done about the frequent stalling and mechanical breakdowns; and

How the government plans to cushion travellers from the constant inconveniences experienced at the channel.

Earlier while speaking during an interview with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) at Parliament Buildings, Ms Mboko highlighted the daily struggles faced by over 300,000 commuters who rely on the ferry service.

“The government has a duty to ensure that the more than 300,000 Kenyans who use the Likoni ferry daily receive fair and dignified treatment,” she stated.

She also called on the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to ensure that security personnel at the ferry terminals treat commuters with respect and professionalism.

“It is unacceptable for travellers to be delayed for hours or to be subjected to rough handling by guards when all they seek is to cross and go about their business. The system must work better,” she added.

The Likoni ferry channel is a key transport artery linking Mombasa Island to the mainland and is considered one of the busiest commuter routes in East Africa.  However, users have long complained about long queues, safety concerns, and unreliable service.

Recent incidents have exacerbated these concerns. On April 17, 2025, multiple ferry breakdowns left only two vessels operational, causing massive delays and overcrowding. Commuters were left stranded for hours, with some attempting to force their way onto the limited ferries available.

Earlier, on February 5, 2025, chaos erupted at the Likoni ferry crossing when passengers clashed with security officers over delays and perceived preferential treatment of vehicles over pedestrians. The confrontation led to temporary suspension of services and heightened tensions at the terminal.

These incidents have reignited calls for comprehensive reforms to ensure efficient, safe, and dignified transport for all ferry users.
