Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi has criticised the recent visit of 10,000 teachers to State House, where he claimed the teachers were given handouts to support President William Ruto.

Speaking at Kariobangi AIC Church in Machakos Town during a fundraiser, Mr Mwangangi said government handouts will not lead to development.

“No country can develop through handouts. Calling delegations to State House and giving out Sh10,000 will not help to develop the country,” he said.

Machakos Central MCA Nicholas Nzioka echoed the sentiments, pointing out that government delays in disbursing school capitation make such gestures meaningless.

“Even when teachers go to State House and capitation is not released to schools, it is useless,” said Mr Nzioka.

The leaders also faulted recent bodaboda empowerment drives. They said that the real way to help riders would be lowering import duty and taxes on motorbike spare parts.

Apart from the 10,000 shillings, teachers’ unions and the Affordable Housing Board signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

In the agreement,  the government will  ensure teachers receive 20 per cent of all units under the Affordable Housing programme.

President Ruto noted that teachers contribute 13 per cent of the monthly housing levy — about KSh900 million every month.

He argued that in return, they deserve better access to decent housing.

The MoU formalises that share: 20 per cent of all affordable housing units will be reserved for teachers.

Implementation shall be carried out under the oversight of the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development.
