Makadara MP leads protest over selective Makongeni evictions

Makadara MP George Aladwa on Sunday joined Makongeni residents in street protests over what they termed unfair evictions to pave way for affordable housing project.

Mr Aladwa criticised the government for quickly demolishing homes while sparing some businesses that continue operating weeks later.

He said residents agreed to vacate for new houses but tension now rises because certain premises remain untouched.

The MP warned that businesses still trading in the area will delay construction.

He added that some owners have gone to court to block further evictions.

Residents now face a two-year wait with no visible progress," Mr Aladwa said.

Ms Anne Mbone, a former resident of the old estate, told journalists that she now lives with her cousin after her home was pulled down in under a week.

She vowed to keep protesting until every remaining business is cleared.

Youth leader David Ochieng complained that prominent people’s businesses have escaped demolition.

He said local youth remain jobless and want President William Ruto to launch the project soon so they can gain employment.

Anti-riot police have since been deployed along Jogoo Road to shield the remaining businesses and maintain order.

On Friday, Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga confirmed the new Makongeni estate will house over 50,000 people.

It will rank among Kenya’s biggest housing schemes. He insisted all evicted residents received full compensation.
