Media Council CEO David Omwoyo urges Muslim journalists to serve society during Ramadan Iftar in Nairobi
Media Council of Kenya CEO, Mr David Omwoyo, has urged journalists to help the less fortunate and let their faith guide their work.
“Help the less fortunate. Let our faith help us perform our duties better,” he said.
Fasting during Ramadan instills honesty, punctuality, straightforwardness, and hard work--all qualities essential for journalists.
Sports Fund CEO, Mr Nuh Mohamed Ibrahim, reflected on the evolution of the media industry.
“But things have changed. You speak now, and the next minutes you’re trending on TikTok,” he said, noting how fast digital media has overtaken traditional newspapers.
Mr Ibrahim announced that the fund is supporting the construction of 22 regional stadiums, in addition to the planned Talanta Sports City.
"We fund and built stadia in the country. Among the 22 is the one in Mombasa," he said.
On Wednesday, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir engaged with Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Mr Salim Mvurya, Principal Secretary for Defence, Dr Patrick Mariru, and Principal Secretary for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, to finalise arrangements for the completion of the 15,000-seater Mombasa Stadium.
“Our shared objective is clear: complete the facility by December 2026 so that Mombasa is ready to play its role as Kenya prepares to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations,” they said.
In parallel, the County Government of Mombasa has already advertised for the construction of two additional stadiums: Likoni Stadium and Ziwani Stadium, featuring FIFA-standard pitches to serve as training grounds for international teams during the tournament.
This coordinated national and county effort will not only prepare Mombasa for AFCON 2027 but also leave a lasting legacy of modern sports infrastructure for youth and the sporting community.
During the Iftar for Muslims Journalists and Media Practitioners organised by MCK, Internews Country Lead and Regional Programme Manager Ms Fatuma Sanbur urged members to complete a survey as the Muslim Media Practitioners network is revamped. Muslim Media former chairman Mr Abu Sufyan Mohamed encouraged stronger participation in meetings.
Over 100 Muslim journalists and media practitioners attended the event at the Stanley Hotel, which highlighted the role of faith, community service, and professional responsibility in journalism.
