The Methodist Church in Kenya has elected Rev John Maromba as its 8th Presiding Bishop during its 60th Annual Conference held from 24th to 29th November 2025 at the Methodist Resort and Conference Centre in Nairobi.
Bishop Maromba secured 145 votes against competitors Rev Catherine Mutua and Bishop Douglas Gitonga, who received 64 and 59 votes respectively.
He previously served as the Conference Secretary of the Methodist Church in Kenya and as Nairobi Synod Bishop.
In his new term, Rev Maromba will serve a five year term alongside Conference Secretary-Elect Rev Nicholas Mutwimtele and Conference Honorary Treasurer Mr David Kaboria. The conference also elected new synod bishops, including two women, reflecting the church’s commitment to gender representation.
In his address on Friday, Rev Maromba outlined the church’s priorities for the coming year, focusing on spiritual renewal, strengthening schools and medical institutions, and expanding community transformation ministries.
He pledged to foster unity within the church following past internal disputes and leadership challenges.
“We have walked through painful seasons, marked by internal tensions, leadership disputes and strained relationships. These challenges affected our witness and raised questions both inside and outside the church. Through repentance, hostility, truth and healing, we choose a new path of reconciliation and restoration."
He emphasized that the church is entering a new chapter of clarity and collective responsibility.
“The season of division is behind us. The season of rebuilding begins now. By God’s grace, we shall rise stronger, wiser and more united,” he said.
He pledged to serve faithfully,"It is with profound humility, I accept this new responsibility to serve as the head presiding bishop of the Methodist Church in Kenya and pledge to serve faithfully, listen graciously and lead courageously,"said Rev Maromba.
He said the church would continue to engage constructively with government institutions, media, and other faith-based organizations to support community development and national initiatives.
