Mombasa nurse among Top 10 global finalists in prestigious nursing award

The nurse's story proves that local service can have global impact.

Mombasa is basking in pride after one of its own, Nurse Khadija Mohamed Juma, earned a place among the Top 10 finalists globally for the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2025, an accolade that attracted over 100,000 nominations from 199 countries.

Working at Tudor sub-County Hospital, Khadija has long been recognized locally for her commitment to maternal and adolescent health. Her nomination brought international attention to Kenya’s community-driven public health efforts.

“Khadija is a true daughter of Mombasa who has made Kenya shine on the global stage,” said Governor Abdulswamad Nassir. “Her journey is a testament to the power of community-rooted healthcare, resilience, and compassion.”

Although the grand prize of USD 250,000 went to another nominee, Khadija’s Top 10 finish is being hailed as a historic achievement.

What set her apart

Khadija’s application focused on:

Maternal and adolescent health advocacy

Leading outreach programmes in informal settlements, providing safe delivery support and reproductive health education.

Pandemic Response Innovation: Integrating mental health support into public health strategies during Covid-19.

Youth empowerment

Mentoring peer educators and advocating for gender-inclusive health education.

Global recognition

She was also a finalist in the Commonwealth Youth Awards Africa for her leadership and impact.
