Mombasa has been ranked among Africa’s cleanest and most attractive cities by Africa Report.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir is celebrating after the coastal city was ranked among Africa’s cleanest and most attractive cities, according to the latest Africa Report survey.
“This is a proud moment for our county,” Nassir said.
“This recognition is the result of commitment, consistency and the collective drive to do better every day.”
The ranking, which surveyed 41 African cities, placed Mombasa 18th overall with a cleanliness score of 5.3, ahead of Nairobi, which ranked 20th with a score of 5.0.
The survey assessed urban cleanliness, infrastructure, and quality of life, drawing responses from nearly 7,900 residents.

Governor Nassir credited the achievement to the partnership between the county government and residents, saying it shows what is possible when citizens take pride in their city.
“It affirms that when government and residents work together, real transformation is possible,” he added.
“We are not slowing down. As we upscale our waste management efforts, our focus remains clear: a cleaner, healthier Mombasa where every resident lives with dignity. Together, we can achieve even more.”
The county government has invested in enhanced waste management, public awareness campaigns, and improved urban services, aiming to ensure Mombasa remains attractive to residents, investors, and tourists alike.
Kigali topped the rankings, followed by Rabat and Cotonou, highlighting cities across Africa that have successfully combined cleanliness with livability.
The Africa Report survey, conducted in October 2025, remains one of the continent’s most comprehensive assessments of urban management and quality of life.
