Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has launched a major security operation in Isiolo, Samburu and Laikipia counties to tackle illegal firearms, cattle rustling and other criminal activities.
The initiative comes amid a prolonged drought in pastoralist areas, which has heightened competition over scarce resources and raised fears of renewed conflict.
He warned that the situation risks reversing gains made through Operation Maliza Uhalifu (OMU) and other security interventions.
Speaking during a meeting with county leaders and top security officials in Isiolo on Tuesday, Mr Murkomen said the drought witnessed in the area can lead to conflict.
"We are touring the region to assess the security situation and lay down strategies to ensure peace and normalcy is sustained, even as the government implements measures to mitigate the impact of the drought," he said.
He announced the immediate launch of a security operation targeting illegal firearms, ammunition, criminals, and those abetting crime.
The CS also said security teams would be reorganised, new roads opened for patrols, and collaboration with stakeholders enhanced to improve network coverage in remote areas.
Leaders present included Governor Abdi Guyo, Deputy Governor James Lowasa, MPs Fatuma Dullo, Mumina Bonaya and Joseph Samal, as well as MCAs led by Speaker Abdullahi Jaldesa.
Security officials at the meeting included Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Brigadier Alex Kiraguri, Deputy Inspector-General Gilbert Masengeli, and GSU Commandant Ranson Lolmodooni.
Mr Murkomen said the operation is aimed at ensuring communities in the North Rift and Upper Eastern regions can live in peace and continue their livelihoods despite the drought.
