A section of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders on Sunday made it clear during the Linda Mwananchi Tour in Busia County, that the party will not be coerced into a political alliance with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 elections.
At the rally, Siaya Governor James Orengo said ODM must decide its own political direction.
He insisted that ODM will not enter into arrangements against the will of its members.
“No one will force us to enter into a government we do not agree with,” Mr Orengo said.
Mr Orengo who has maintained his stand sunce the burial of ODM founder Raila Odinga, emphasised that ODM’s direction must be determined internally and in consultation with its grassroots supporters.
ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna echoed the warning.
“ODM will chart its own course. We must remain united and true to our principles,” he said.
ODM party leader Dr Oburu Oginga on Friday accused the Nairobi Senator of creating confusion within the party.
He said Mr Sifuna had failed to distinguish between his personal opinions and that of the
Spokesperson.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino criticised what he called a drift from ODM’s activist roots.
He argued that the party must stand firm rather than be absorbed into government arrangements.
The Linda Mwananchi Tour, aimed at taking party leaders to grassroots communities.
The discussions were “focused on reconnecting with communities, listening to their frustrations over rising living costs, and setting a clear course for 2027.”
The sentiments came as another faction tasked Dr Oburu to begin structured talks with UDA.
The discussions are in early stages and have not resulted in a formal alliance, with Dr Oginga describing them as exploratory and focusing on national interest rather than any binding agreement.
Meanwhile at the Coast, ODM Deputy Party Leader and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir hosted party leaders from across the region for a consultative session.
The meeting reaffirmed commitment to ODM and discussing local priorities such as unemployment, rising living costs, land rights, and economic recovery.
“Our unity as ODM leaders at the Coast is firm,” Governor Nassir said after the meeting.
