The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended the licence of a Neema Travellers Agency Ltd (Sacco) driver for 90 days after he failed a mandatory retest, following a viral video showing him driving dangerously on a pedestrian walkway along Allsops Road, Thika Road, Nairobi.

The video, which circulated widely on social media, captured the matatu driving on the raised pedestrian path rather than the designated carriageway.

Pedestrians were forced to step aside to avoid the vehicle.

Bystanders were seen reacting with concern as the vehicle continued along the footpath, a surface intended for people on foot.

In response, NTSA summoned the driver for a competency assessment, which he failed.

In addition to the 90-day licence suspension, the driver must undergo a medical assessment before being allowed to retake the test.

“We urge all drivers to exercise responsibility while on the road, observe traffic regulations, and always give way to pedestrians,” NTSA said in a statement.

The Authority also commended the public for reporting the incident, emphasizing the critical role of citizen vigilance in promoting road safety.

“The public plays a crucial role in holding drivers accountable. Reporting unsafe behaviour helps us keep our roads safer,” the statement added.

The action is part of ongoing NTSA enforcement against rogue PSV drivers and unsafe driving practices in Nairobi, reinforcing the Authority’s commitment to safeguard pedestrians and passengers across the city’s busy transport corridors.
