Former Migori Governor Zacharia Okoth Obado and two associates allegedly orchestrated the 2018 killing of university student Sharon Otieno, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) told Milimani High Court on Friday.

Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Gikui Gichuhi said the evidence paints a chilling picture of a coordinated plot.

“The accused acted in concert, with shared intent to eliminate Sharon Otieno and silence a witness to protect Obado’s political standing,” she said.

Co-accused Michael Juma Oyamo and Casper Ojwang Obiero were identified as trusted operatives in the alleged scheme.

They were reportedly at Graca Hotel on September 3, 2018, when Sharon and a key witness were abducted.

The vehicle used, registration number KCL 418K, is registered to Obiero’s wife and driven by a longtime associate.

The prosecution laid out a trail of damning evidence, including witness testimonies, cybercrime reports, phone data, and forensic analysis.

“From the start, our evidence forms a complete picture of the events that led to Sharon’s death,” Gichuhi said, dismissing the defence as inconsistent and misleading.

The Milimani High Court has confirmed the three have a case to answer.

The next hearing, which will set the judgment date, is scheduled for March 18, 2026.

The case has gripped the nation, highlighting alleged abuses of power and the dangers faced by those who confront politically connected figures.

Sharon’s family and civil society groups have long demanded justice, and the trial is expected to test Kenya’s ability to hold powerful leaders accountable.
