ODM will not surrender parliamentary seats in coalition talks - PG
Orange Democratic Movement party's Parliamentary Group has vowed to defend all its seats in the 2027 General elections.
National Assembly Minority Leader Mr Junet Mohamed who read the PG"s resolutions said the party will retain all its parliamentary seats as it engages in political negotiations with other parties.
Speaking after a joint Parliamentary Group meeting held at Parliament building on Tuesday, Mr Junet said members resolved to strengthen the party and safeguard its numerical strength in Parliament.
“We are not giving up our numbers,” he said, adding that any party seeking to associate with ODM must recognise and respect its current parliamentary position.
The meeting was chaired by ODM Party Leader Dr Oburu Oginga.
Conspicuously absent was embattled Secretary General Mr Edwin Sifuna.
Mr Junet said the meeting endorsed the National Executive Committee (NEC) and its resolutions, including the convening of a National Delegates Conference on the 27th of this month.
"The party will issue further communication on Friday," said the Suna East MP.
He also said the Parliamentary Group members endorsed implementation of the Ten-Point Agenda whose report shall be received on Tuesday, March 10.
"We have resolved to follow-up on the ten-point agenda when the report will be handed over during a joint Parliamentary Group meeting at KICC next week," he said.
On negotiations with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), he said the ODM constitution gives the party leader the mandate to negotiate on behalf of the party.
By saying the party will not give up its numbers, Mr Junet was signalling that ODM, as the dominant party, will not cede any of its parliamentary seats even in coalition negotiations.
ODM is making it clear it will enter alliances only on terms that do not reduce its current seat count, ensuring the party retains its bargaining strength in Parliament.
