Oyuu retains KNUT Secretary General seat as Sossion comeback bid fizzles out
Collins Oyuu has been re-elected Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) during a Special Delegates Conference held at Tom Mboya Labour College, Kisumu on Friday.
Oyuu secured another five-year term amid expectations of a contest, especially after former Secretary General Wilson Sossion had signalled interest in reclaiming the post.
He had cited his commitment to teachers’ welfare and promised fresh leadership if elected. He stated he aimed to address issues like salaries, working conditions and teachers’ representation in national education policy.
However, the anticipated showdown failed to materialise, with Oyuu and several top officials elected unopposed.
This is after Oyuu questioned Sossion's eligibility since he was no longer an active member of KNUT.
Sossion comeback collapses
The outcome effectively shuts the door on Sossion’s attempted return to the powerful teachers’ union, which he previously led for years before exiting.
His absence from the ballot handed Oyuu a smooth path to retain control of the union.
No contest at the top
Other key leadership positions, including the national chairperson and deputy roles, also failed to attract challengers.
The elections, therefore, turned into a largely uncontested process despite earlier signals of a potential battle.
Union officials described the outcome as a show of confidence in the current leadership.
Questions over internal democracy
The lack of competition is now likely to raise concerns over internal democracy within KNUT, one of Kenya’s most influential labour unions.
The organisation plays a central role in negotiations on teachers’ salaries, promotions and working conditions.
With no serious challenger emerging, Oyuu now begins a fresh term firmly in control as the union navigates ongoing issues in the education sector.
Confirmed national officials elected unopposed.
