Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church and has taken the name Pope Leo XIV.
His election was announced by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica on Thursday at night, shortly after white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, signaling a successful conclave.
Who is Pope Leo XIV?
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Francis Prevost is the first American-born pope in the history of the Catholic Church.
He is also the first member of the Augustinian Order to ascend to the papacy.
Before his election, Pope Leo XIV served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a key Vatican department responsible for overseeing the selection of bishops worldwide.
His extensive missionary work in Peru, where he served as bishop of Chiclayo, and his leadership roles within the Augustinian Order have been notable aspects of his ecclesiastical career.
