Port of Mombasa receives first cruise ship of 2026 as MV Crystal Symphony docks

MV Crystal Symphony spent a full day in Mombasa before it was expected to continue its journey to India.

The Port of Mombasa on Sunday morning received the first cruise ship of the year, with the luxury liner MV Crystal Symphony sailing into the harbour on its second call to Kenya.

The 238-metre-long vessel, carrying more than 1,000 guests, arrived from Port Elizabeth, South Africa, marking the start of what is expected to be a busy cruise tourism season at the port.

The ship last visited Kenya during its inaugural voyage last year.

MV Crystal Symphony spent a full day in Mombasa before it was expected to continue its journey to India.

During their stay, tourists toured Kenya’s wildlife parks, explored Mombasa’s historic streets, and visited other local attractions along the coast.

Crystal Symphony’s Cruise Entertainment Director, Ms Vicky Vantassel, said the passengers were delighted to be back in Kenya.

“We’ve received such a warm welcome. Everyone is excited to explore Kenya, even if just for the day,” Ms Vantassel said.

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) said the visit underscored Mombasa’s growing profile as a cruise tourism destination.

KPA Corporation Secretary and General Manager for Board and Legal Services, Mr Turasha Kinyanjui, reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to enhancing guest experience.

Speaking on behalf of Managing Director Captain William Ruto, Mr Kinyanjui said the port was focused on upgrading facilities and strengthening collaboration with tourism stakeholders to support cruise operations.

The visit of MV Crystal Symphony signals increased cruise activity at the port, with several more cruise vessels expected to dock in Mombasa in the coming weeks, offering a boost to local tourism and related businesses.

Also present during the welcome reception were Kenya Tourism Board Chief Executive Officer Ms June Chepkemei and senior officials from the Mombasa County Government.
