Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Tuesday received the certificate of full registration for his newly formed political party, National Economic Development Party (NEDP), after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) formally cleared the application at its Westlands offices.
Sonko, flanked by senior party officials and supporters, accepted the certificate at Lion Place, after ORPP confirmed that NEDP met all legal and administrative requirements under the Political Parties Act.
Speaking after the registration, Sonko described NEDP as “the party to watch.”
He said its aim is to build “a movement that will help form the next government,” with a foundation based on economic transformation, development, and upgrading the livelihoods of Kenyans.
He acknowledged the long journey to register the party, saying it started in 2019 and faced several delays before official recognition.
“Today, we are very glad the ORPP has issued us with full party registration of our party NEDP‑K. It has not been an easy journey, but we have finally arrived,” Sonko said.
Sonko also called on Kenyans of all ages and backgrounds to join what he called a national renewal platform.
“We welcome everyone from Gen Z to elders, from all political backgrounds, anyone who believes in changing our country. Let us join hands and work together,” he said.
He further pledged that NEDP will focus on creating opportunities and improving livelihoods across the country.
“Our foundation is economic transformation and development. We want to uplift communities and ensure every Kenyan has a chance to prosper,” Sonko added.
The registration of NEDP gives Sonko a fresh political vehicle ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party officials say he will serve as interim party leader until formal leadership is ratified through a delegates’ process.
With NEDP formally registered, Sonko appears ready to re-enter the national political arena after years of legal and eligibility challenges.
