MOMBASA, Kenya

Tanzanian musician Sefu Shabani Ramadhan, popularly known as Matonya, has been charged with rape in a Mombasa court.

The 43-year-old appeared before Chief Magistrate Robinson Ondiek at the Shanzu Law Courts, where he denied the charge.

What the court heard

Prosecutors told the court the alleged offence took place on April 7, 2026, at an apartment in Nyali Sub-County.

The charge, brought under Kenya’s Sexual Offences Act, accuses the musician of unlawfully committing the act against an adult woman.

The prosecution pushed for strict bail conditions, arguing the accused is a foreign national without a fixed residence in Kenya, raising the risk of flight.

The court agreed, granting:

  • Bond of Sh500,000 with one Kenyan surety
  • Surrender of his Tanzanian passport
  • A ban on leaving Kenya without court approval

Immigration authorities were also directed to flag him at all border points to prevent any attempt to exit the country.

The case now proceeds to hearing, with the court ensuring the accused remains within its jurisdiction as investigations and trial continue.
