A middle aged female teacher has died, four(4) others hospitalized after they were involved in a Tuesday night road accident in Murang'a County, Murang'a South Deputy County Commissioner Gitonga Murungi confirmed on Thursday.
The accident had 12 victims, the five(5) teachers included.
"The accident occurred along Kenol-Murang'a road near Pioneer junction leading to Three Rivers Hotel and it involved a 14-seater public transport motor vehicle and a small car," Mr Murungi said.
He said that the public transport vehicle was travelling from Kenol and heading towards Murang'a town when it suffered a front right wheel tyre burst.
"According to the preliminary investigation report, the burst caused the driver to lose control of the motor vehicle, swerved to the right, veered off the road as he tried to have a head on collision with the small car and eventually landed in a ditch on the right side of the road," he Murungi narrated.
Mr Murungi said that "it was ascertained that due to the impact one(1) person died on the spot while all the other 11 victims sustained various injuries".
Mr Murungi added that all the injured were rushed to Maragua Level 4 Hospital where they were admitted in varying conditions.
"The body of the deceased was moved to Murang'a Level 5 Hospital morgue for preservation awaiting postmortem as further investigation and monitoring the progress of the hospitalized continues," he said.
Mr Murungi and several teachers visited the injured at the hospital on Tuesday night.
"We have been assured by the medics that all the victims are out of danger and they are in high spirits. We are optimistic that they will soon be reuniting with their family members," he said.
