As Albert Omondi Ojwang’s burial approaches today Friday, his family home in Kakoth Village, Homa Bay County, remains tense and heavily guarded.

Police officers have been stationed around the compound as the community prepares to bid farewell to the 31‑year‑old teacher and blogger.

According to witnesses, the night vigil was markedly subdued. Many local youths and students chose to stay away, in silent protest against the violence that followed Thursday’s procession.

That afternoon, mourners had carried Ojwang’s coffin to Mawego Police Station--where he was first detained after his arrest before he was taken to Nairobi. What began as a symbolic stop became a flashpoint. The station was stormed and torched. A police vehicle was set ablaze. Officers reportedly fled as the crowd raged.

Ojwang’s death has shocked the nation. Police gave conflicting accounts--first illness, then suicide. CCTV footage went missing. But a postmortem revealed blunt-force injuries. The signs, many believe, point not to tragedy, but to torture and a cover-up.

At his requiem Mass in Nairobi on Wednesday, hundreds gathered to mourn. Civil society leaders and politicians, including former Attorney General Justin Muturi and Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, demanded justice.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has since approved murder charges against six(6) suspects--four(4) police officers and two(2) civilians. Three(3) Mawego-based officers are also under investigation.

Still in Kakoth, the mood is grim.

“We are burying our son today, but we are not burying the truth,” said a relative on Friday morning.

“Let the system know--this family will not forget.”

As the body is prepared for burial in nearby Kakwonyo, residents remain cautious.

Hymns rise from the compound, but fewer voices join in. The heavy presence of armed police has dampened the mood further.

AVDelta News will update on the burial as and when it takes place.
