Tubi siblings battle for father’s inheritance as by-elections test IEBC’s readiness

Mini-polls across Kenya test IEBC’s readiness and local political muscle.

The Isiolo South parliamentary by-election has boiled down to a family showdown: brother and sister fighting for their late father Mohamed Tubi’s political legacy.

Tubi Mohamed Tubi (UDA) and Bina Mohamed Tubi (Jubilee) are the only active candidates following the withdrawal of Fayo Isack Abduba (NEDP) just a week before the vote.

His name may still appear on the ballot, potentially confusing voters.

With only the siblings campaigning, the race is as much about legacy and loyalty as it is about political strategy.

IEBC oversight and security

Returning Officer Abdi Sheikh Mohammed briefed polling officials before distributing materials, emphasizing adherence to the law.

Commissioners Hassan Noor Hassan, EBS, and Dr Alutalala Mukhwana toured Isiolo South to check preparations and held a security briefing with officers led by Garbatula Deputy County Commissioner Charles Wandimi.

Dr Alutalala said the Commission had measures in place to ensure a credible, transparent election, while security agencies were confident they could maintain order.

The Deputy County Commissioner urged residents to stay peaceful.

Other by-elections on Thursday

Voters will also head to the polls in:

  • West Kabras Ward, Kakamega County
  • Muminji Ward, Embu County
  • Evurore Ward, Embu County

These mini‑polls come after different types of vacancies opened up:

The Isiolo South parliamentary seat was left vacant following the death of MP Mohamed Tubi Bidu.

In West Kabras Ward (Kakamega County) the MCA seat fell open after David Ndakwa resigned to run for Malava MP, a bid he won; and in Muminji and Evurore Wards (Embu County) the seats became vacant when MCAs Newton Kariuki and Duncan Mbui resigned to vie for the Mbeere North parliamentary seat but both lost to Leo Wamuthende in that contest.

Final preparations

IEBC on Wednesday distributed ballot papers, serviced KIEMS kits, trained officials, and coordinated security.

Polling stations open at 6am and close at 5pm, with voters in line allowed to cast ballots.

In Isiolo South, though, the spotlight is on the Tubi sibling--only one will carry their father’s political mantle forward.
