Two people jumped to safety when a building collapsed in Shauri Moyo on Monday killing four people while four others were injured.

Rescue teams were racing against time the better part of Monday afternoon after a building collapsed in the Blue Estate area of Shauri Moyo, trapping several people beneath the rubble.

The incident occurred near structures that were being demolished on riparian land, triggering panic among residents and an emergency response from rescuers.

According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, early reports indicated that about 10 people were inside the building when it collapsed.

Two of them managed to escape by jumping out of the structure moments before it came down.

Emergency teams have so far rescued four people alive from the debris.

The injured victims were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for medical attention and Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

First aid was also administered at the scene as rescue teams continued combing through the wreckage.

Residents urged the government to ensure in future that it completes the demolition process entirely once it starts rather than leaving dangerously hanging structures.
