Winnie Odinga warns ODM against expulsions

Winnie dismissed claims that the late Raila Odinga left instructions on succession or authorised the exclusion of dissenting voices.

East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga has warned leaders within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) against pushing out members.

She said on Sunday that the party risks undermining its democratic roots at a time of internal transition.

Speaking at a public rally at Kamukunji Grounds in Kibra, Nairobi, Ms Odinga dismissed claims that the late Raila Odinga left instructions on succession or authorised the exclusion of dissenting voices.

“Baba did not leave anyone his shoes, and he did not leave anyone his bedroom,” Ms Odinga said.
“Anyone claiming Baba left instructions about who should lead ODM is lying.”

She cautioned party leaders against invoking Raila Odinga’s name to intimidate members or settle internal scores.

“Nobody will be removed from ODM. This is a people’s party,” she said.

Ms Odinga’s remarks come amid growing unease within ODM following Raila Odinga’s death, with debates intensifying over leadership, succession and control of party structures ahead of the 2027 General Election.

She said disagreements should be resolved through dialogue and formal party organs, not through threats or expulsions.

“If I see things going wrong, I will speak. ODM must remain democratic,” she added.

Ms Odinga spoke as her uncle, Dr Oburu Oginga led delegates’ meetings in Kakamega County.

The ODM delegates’ consultative forum was held at Mabole Primary School Grounds in Butere Sub-County.

“We must remain united and focused,” said Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, highlighting experience and discipline as vital rather than age in leadership, and urging members not to let divisions weaken the party.
