Police officers in Kikuyu Sub-County, Kiambu County, in a joint operation with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), have uncovered a shocking haul of illegal zebra meat, raising fresh concerns about wildlife trafficking and public health risks.

Acting on a tip-off, officers on Wednesday raided a residential premise in Gikambura and recovered over one tonne of zebra meat, including a skinned carcass and assorted processed portions.

Authorities also seized equipment believed to have been used in processing the meat and a motor vehicle suspected of transporting the illegal products.

Three suspects were arrested during the raid, and all exhibits have been secured for further investigation.

Sources indicate that the operation was part of a wider crackdown on the bushmeat trade, which has been linked to both wildlife conservation threats and potential health hazards from unregulated meat consumption.

Officials warned that consuming bushmeat poses serious health risks, including exposure to zoonotic diseases, while also threatening Kenya’s wildlife populations.

“We urge the public to report suspicious activities immediately.

Protecting our wildlife is everyone’s responsibility,” a police statement read.

The National Police Service, working closely with KWS, reiterated its commitment to clamping down on wildlife crimes, particularly illegal bushmeat trade, which remains a persistent challenge across the country.

Members of the public can report illegal activities via toll-free numbers 999, 911, and 112.
