Msambweni OCPD urges parents to safeguard children during holiday season

As schools close for the long holiday, Msambweni  OCPD Ahmed Hillow has urged parents to keep a vigilant eye on their children to prevent them from falling prey to juvenile gangs and drug abuse.

Mr Hillow highlighted the risks that the holiday season poses to minors.

“This is going to be a long holiday Children often find themselves with unstructured time which can lead them into risky behaviour. It is during this time that young people are lured into gangs and drugs,” he stated.

The OCPD emphasized the importance of parental supervision, noting that children are particularly vulnerable during long breaks from school.

“Parents must engage with their children, understand their activities, and encourage positive hobbies.It is crucial to create an environment where children feel safe and supported,” he advised.

Local community leaders echoed Mwita’s concerns, reinforcing the need for collective responsibility.

“We all have a role to play in protecting our youth. Parents should not only monitor their children’s whereabouts but also educate them about the dangers of drugs and gangs," said community leader Amani Juma.

To combat the rising concern, the police have initiated community outreach programs aimed at raising awareness about the risks associated with holiday idleness.

“We will be organising workshops and events to educate both parents and children about the dangers of drug abuse and gang involvement,” Mr Hillow added.

The OCPD also encouraged families to participate in community activities that promote social cohesion.

“By engaging in positive community events, we can create a protective buffer against negative influences,” he suggested.

In a bid to ensure the safety of minors, the police are also ramping up patrols in areas known for gang activity.

“Our officers will be on the lookout for suspicious behaviour, and we urge anyone who sees something unusual to report it immediately,” he said.

At the same time, he warned against children going to the beach unsupervised.

"We do not want cases of children drowning while on holiday. If they must go to the beach then they should be supervised by an adult," he said.
