Thousands of learners drawn from various Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions convened at the Nyeri National Polytechnic for this year’s cultural, talent and skills competition and a job fair day.

During the two(2) days event, the trainees showcased different talent through dances, catwalks, poems, and rapping in diverse culture themes.

The event, themed “unlocking opportunities for social economic transformation through technical skills and talents for the youths”, was attended by learners, staff, alumni learners and management of various TVET institutions.

The annual event, which was graced by Nyeri National Polytechnic chief principal Dr David Mwangi, brought together local and international job employers together with officials from the National Employment Authority (NEA).

Graduates who excelled in diverse fields for job opportunities were also picked.

“We are glad to host this annual event because it helps the students to showcase their untapped skills they have acquired from TVET training. We will continue holding these events so as to link our learners to the job market,” Dr Mwangi said.

Learners who emerged winners in various categories were awarded in a colourful ceremony.

The institution recently released its first group of 4,823 graduates who were trained under the Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) program.

Recently, Principal Secretary for TVET Esther Muoria said that the CEBET programme will be anchored in all TVET institutions in the country for continuous skills development of learners.

“We have shifted completely from any theory-based training to competency-based training where our youths will gain skills. Competency curriculum is trained basically on what you can do for yourself. These are the skills that the world is looking for from our youths,” Dr Muoria said.

On his part, Dr Mwangi said: “The government has never wavered in its commitment to improving education across in its pursuit of excellence. Significant progress has been made in TVET through infrastructure improvement, provision of contemporary equipment and hiring of skilled instructors”.
