Anti-narcotics detectives have arrested a 27-year-old woman in possession of two kilogrammes of bhang at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect, identified as Ms Quinter Achieng Matengo, was intercepted on her way to Doha, Qatar.

The arrest followed heightened suspicion during routine screening of her baggage by Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) staff in collaboration with the Anti-Narcotics team.

"Working closely with KAA staff who flagged suspicious items during baggage screening, detectives intercepted the suspected drug trafficker en route to Doha, Qatar," the DCI said.

Further investigation revealed that the drugs were concealed in packets of maize flour. After interrogation, Ms Matengo was handed over to the anti-narcotics unit for processing.

"After weighing, the recovered drugs were securely stored as evidence while the suspect was prepared for arraignment," police confirmed.

Cases of seizure of narcotics at the airport have been on the rise due to various measures put in place. These include thorough screening.

This is the latest seizure of narcotics in the country in a renewed campaign against trafficking and consumption.

The seizure, according to police, indicates the drugs had arrived in Nairobi for repackaging before they were exported.
