Governor Nassir said political leadership sometimes requires difficult but pragmatic choices guided by a realistic assessment.
Mombasa Governor and ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir has called on the Orange Democratic Movement to consider formalising a pre-election coalition with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a strongly worded statement, Mr Nassir said political leadership sometimes requires difficult but pragmatic choices guided by a realistic assessment of the prevailing political environment.
“Leadership sometimes requires making hard, pragmatic choices guided by a clear reading of reality,” Mr Nassir said.
He said his position was informed by a sober evaluation of the political terrain, the balance of forces and the available pathways to safeguard ODM’s interests while advancing its agenda.
“I am calling on my colleagues within the Orange Democratic Movement to consider formalisation of a pre-election coalition with United Democratic Alliance in good faith ahead of the 2027 elections,” he said.
The Mombasa governor argued that beyond the implementation of ODM’s 10-Point Agenda, politics was ultimately about making choices that prioritise outcomes over rhetoric.
“We must choose engagement over perpetual confrontation, strategy over sentiment, and outcomes over slogans,” Mr Nassir said.
He added that ODM should align itself with partners who demonstrate respect and tolerance, rather than political formations he accused of harbouring contempt and discrimination.
“We would rather work with partners who have demonstrated respect and tolerance than align with those who have consistently shown contempt and discrimination,” he said.
Mr Nassir said such decisions required clarity, courage and discipline, noting that leadership demands acting in the long-term interests of both the party and the people it represents.
“This is what leadership demands: clarity, courage, and the discipline to act in the long-term interest of our people and our party,” he said.
His remarks are likely to stir debate within ODM, a party traditionally associated with opposition politics, as it weighs its strategy ahead of the next general election.
