After the graduation ceremony, President Ruto’s convoy will proceed through Kisumu city to a public rally in Kondele and an inspection of affordable housing initiatives in Kanyakwar.
President William Ruto arrived in Kisumu on Friday (today) to attend and grace the 5th graduation ceremony of Uzima University, held at its main campus in Kisumu County.
This occasion represents an important milestone for the emerging university and the students completing their studies.The President was accompanied on arrival by Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo, Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko, Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr Mathews Owili, Rarieda MP Dr Otiende Amollo, Kisumu West MP Rozaah Buyu, Kisumu Central MP Dr Joshua Oron, Nyando MP Jared Okello, and Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabbir.
They were welcomed by various national and county leaders.
The event attracted numerous Members of Parliament, governors, senior government officials, local leaders, and university academics, highlighting its significance in both educational and political spheres.
Graduands, along with their parents, guardians, and other invited guests, filled the grounds in a vibrant display of academic success and determination.
The ceremony's smooth execution resulted from the collaborative efforts of Uzima University Vice-Chancellor Rev. Fr. Prof. Cosmas Rhagot K'Otienoh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Finance and Administration Omulo Okal, Chancellor Prof Oyuko Mbeche, Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Ogamba, and Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala of the State Department for Higher Education and Research.
Since its founding, Uzima University has produced 1,666 graduates in total, and its current student population stands at 2,459.Prof Rhagot revealed that 393 students are due to graduate today, including 82 doctors.
“I am proud because Uzima University is recognised across Africa. We have worked hard to ensure it trains competent medical professionals,” Prof Rhagot stated.
President Ruto is anticipated to stress education’s vital contribution to Kenya’s socio-economic progress, particularly through healthcare education, innovation, and empowering the youth.
Specialising in health sciences and allied fields, Uzima University plays a vital role in supplying healthcare professionals to the nation, especially in areas with limited access.
The President’s attendance is regarded as valuable encouragement for universities located beyond major cities, reflecting the government’s dedication to promoting balanced regional growth and broader access to high-quality higher education.
Local leaders expressed appreciation for the visit, pointing out its beneficial effect on the area’s visibility and advancement priorities.
During the proceedings, hundreds of students will receive degrees and diplomas in different fields, marking their formal entry into professional careers.
