A lobby group has urged for the government to harmonise and consolidate its  bursaries into a single funding kitty.

Wadau Wa Elimu officials say the move can make it easier for the public to track the allocation and utilisation of education funds.

This, they added, would lead to greater accountability and trust in the education system.

"Distributing bursaries from various sources such as the Ministry of Education (MoE), Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of County Assemblies (MCAs), and Governors, can be burdensome and inefficient,"  said Mr Ben Orwasa, group chair in a statement.

Mr Orwasa said the current fragmented bursary allocation system poses great challenges for the applicants.

"By consolidating all education funds into a single national kitty, the government can ensure a more equitable and transparent distribution of resources," he said. .

A consolidated education fund, he went on, would further help reduce regional and socio-economic disparities in accessing to education by providing a more equitable distribution of resources.

A consolidated kitty would also help the government to align its vision with the constitution.

"By establishing a national kitty to fully finance education, the government can better align its actions with the constitutional provisions," he said.

The 2010 Constitution emphasises the importance of free and compulsory basic education for all children, the group said
