Democratic Party denounces its parliamentarians who impeached Gachagua

Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) has denounced its Parliamentarians who voted in favour of the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The party says that Mr Gachagua’s impeachment from office was not part of its agenda.

According to DP’s national chairman Esau Kioni, the lawmakers who endorsed the impeachment motion in the two Houses--National Assembly and Senate--did it on their individual decision.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, Mr Kioni argued that the impeachment was neither a priority for the country nor for the party.

Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku endorsed the impeachment motion at the National Assembly, while Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi supported it at the Senate.

“We have one member of the National Assembly, one Senator and five MCAs. Those who voted in Parliament for the impeachment of Gachagua did so on their own accord. Voting in favour of the impeachment motion was not inline within the policies of Democratic Party,” the chairman said.

“We want to clearly state that the impeachment was not a priority for Democratic Party and the country at large. There are many issues facing the country that are of prime importance,” he added.

He said the party leadership is experiencing problems from Kenyans, while trying to disassociate itself from the impeachment that is currently being contested in court.

“As the leadership of a party that is allied to the Kenya Kwanza coalition, we are getting a backlash from members of the public who claim that we misled them. Kenya Kwanza should change its steps and get back to the right pathway for this country,” said Mr Kioni.

“We need peace which is one of the elements necessary for the development of any country,” he added.
