In a significant moment for Kenya's security sector, President William Ruto officiated the swearing-in of Douglas Kanja as the new Inspector General (IG) of Police.
The event, which took place on Thursday at State House, marked a new chapter for the National Police Service, with President Ruto expressing full confidence in Kanja’s leadership and capabilities.
During his address, President Ruto lauded Kanja’s extensive career in the police service, highlighting his dedication, discipline, and commitment to the nation.
"Your many years of service in the police force and to the country counted in your nomination and subsequent appointment. I have faith in your abilities to provide leadership to the men and women in our Police Service," the President stated.
Dr Ruto emphasized the significant responsibility that comes with commanding the largest body of armed men and women in Kenya, noting that it requires both authority and accountability.
He expressed gratitude to the acting IG and the officers who have maintained continuity in the service over recent months, ensuring the nation’s security was never compromised.
The President underscored the importance of a secure and stable environment for meaningful development in Kenya.
"There cannot be any meaningful development without a secure and stable environment," Dr Ruto noted, reinforcing the government's commitment to supporting the police force through enhanced resources, human capital, and legislative backing.
In his remarks, President Ruto also touched on the crucial role of law enforcement in safeguarding Kenya’s democracy and upholding the rule of law.
He called on all Kenyans to respect and support the security agencies, ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their status or position, are treated equally under the law.
Kanja's swearing-in comes at a time when the government is rolling out the implementation of recommendations from a task force aimed at improving the police service, prison service, and the National Youth Service.
President Ruto reiterated his commitment to ensuring the operational and financial independence of the National Police Service, which he had promised at the beginning of his term.
In conclusion, President Ruto urged all arms of government to work together in service of the Kenyan people.
"Whatever authority we have should be focused on serving the people of Kenya," he said.
The head of state expressed confidence that Kanja’s leadership, along with the support of his team, would contribute to a more secure and stable Kenya.
