Kenya has recorded its highest-ever electricity consumption, hitting a peak demand of 2,411.98 megawatts and daily energy use of 44,122.60 megawatt-hours on October 24.

The record reflects growing industrial and household demand, driven largely by renewable energy supplied by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).

In a statement dated October 28, 2025, KenGen Managing Director and CEO Eng Peter Njenga said the company continues to lead Kenya’s clean energy transition through geothermal and hydropower generation, which together contribute more than 53 per cent of the country’s electricity.

“KenGen’s consistent renewable generation continues to anchor Kenya’s grid reliability and reduce reliance on expensive thermal power, aligning with national climate goals,” said Eng Njenga.

Data from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) shows that KenGen’s geothermal stations generated 12,787MWh, surpassing dispatch projections by 5.07 per cent, while hydropower plants produced 9,871MWh, exceeding targets by 3.23 per cent.

Wind generation also rose by 15.45 per cent, though solar output dipped by 21.5 per cent due to seasonal changes. To stabilise supply, thermal plants briefly contributed 11 per cent of total generation.

Despite record consumption, no power outages were reported — a sign of improved grid stability and growing renewable capacity led by KenGen and other energy players.

Eng Njenga said the achievement aligns with KenGen’s Green Generation (G2G) 2034 Strategy, which seeks to expand clean energy and optimise existing assets to support Kenya’s industrial growth.

“This growth in power demand is a strong indicator of Kenya’s economic rebound and the success of our long-term investments in sustainable generation,” he said.

KenGen currently commands more than 60 per cent of Kenya’s electricity generation market, with an installed capacity of 1,786MW — about 90 per cent of it from renewable sources including hydro, geothermal, and wind.
