The closure is part of ongoing roadwork to construct the right-hand side carriageway linking the Southern and Western Bypass.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a one-month temporary closure of the Gitaru interchange on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The closure, which starts on November 19, 2024, is part of ongoing roadwork to construct the right-hand side carriageway linking the Southern and Western Bypass.

In a statement on Wednesday, KeNHA revealed that the closure would affect traffic flow along several key routes, including the Southern Bypass, Western Bypass, Waiyaki Way (A8), and Rironi Road. The disruption is expected to last until December 19, 2024.

"We would like to inform the public of a temporary traffic disruption at the Gitaru interchange on Waiyaki Way (A8) and the Southern Bypass to Western Bypass," KeNHA said.

To mitigate the disruption, KeNHA has provided alternative routes for affected motorists and is advising them to follow traffic signs and instructions from police officers and traffic marshals.

Motorists attempting to connect from the Western Bypass to Rironi Road will be required to reroute through the Kanjeru underpass.

Drivers using Rironi Road will need to take slip roads to access either the Southern or Western bypasses.

Motorists travelling from Nakuru to the Southern Bypass will be diverted at the Regen/Magana interchange, approximately three kilometres from the Gitaru interchange, to continue their journey along the Southern Bypass.

This closure comes after a similar disruption in August 2024 due to roadworks at the Gitaru interchange.

KeNHA's larger efforts to upgrade the interchange include the roadworks, which aim to reduce congestion and improve road safety in the area.

Once completed, the upgrade should improve traffic flow, shorten travel times, and improve access to key intersections.

KeNHA has noted that these improvements will play a crucial role in enhancing the overall efficiency and safety of the road network for all motorists.
