Kenya to mark newly established Mazingira Day on Thursday

CS Duale highlighted the importance of the day in mobilising citizens and the government to work together in addressing critical environmental issues.

Kenyans are set to commemorate the newly established Mazingira Day on Thursday, a public holiday dedicated to environmental conservation.

The holiday was officially introduced after President William Ruto signed the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendments Act) 2024 into effect, renaming Utamaduni Day to focus on tackling Kenya’s ecological challenges.

Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Aden Duale highlighted the importance of the day in mobilising citizens and the government to work together in addressing critical environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

He urged Kenyans to actively engage in conservation efforts, especially the national initiative to plant 15 billion trees by 2032, part of a broader goal to restore 10.6 million hectares of degraded land.

“Mazingira Day presents an opportunity to boost environmental protection and raise awareness on key challenges facing our planet," Mr Duale stated, emphasizing the need for urgent collective action.

To mark the occasion, Kenyans are encouraged to participate in tree planting drives, clean-up activities across public spaces, and attend forums promoting sustainable practices like waste reduction and pollution control.

The holiday reinforces the country’s commitment to creating a healthier environment and ensuring sustainable development for future generations.
