KNCHR condemns police brutality meted on Multimedia University students
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has called out police over what it termed as barbaric conduct and excessive use of force against Multimedia University students who were protesting on Tuesday.
In the press release by the commission highlighted the case of Trevor Mureithi, a student allegedly tortured by police during the protests.
In a video circulating on social media, police officers, equipped with tear gas canisters and batons are seen attacking some students including Trevor.
One clip shows Trevor being kicked before an officer hurled a canister near him, further endangering his life in case of an explosion.
The quick thinking of Trevor saved him from immediate harm.
"This impunity being displayed by the police must come to an end. We cannot stand by and watch the force turn this country into a banana republic," said KNCHR Chairperson Roseline Odede.
The commission called for immediate investigations into the matter, calling on the Inspector General of Police to take action.
"Officers involved must face the full force of the law," Ms Odede added.
KNCHR further demanded that the National Police Service cover Trevor's medical expenses and address the mental health needs of the officers involved.
Additionally, the commission emphasized the need for adherence to the rule of law.
“Police must live up to their promise of ‘Utumishi kwa Wote’,” the statement read, reminding the security personnel of their duty to protect the public while adhering to human rights standards.
The incident happened on Tuesday when Multimedia University students were protesting along Magadi Road due to lack of water and internet from the school facilities.
