The final mass for the late Raila Amolo Odinga is underway at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo.

The service is led by the Anglican Church, with Bishop Emeritus Dr Joseph Otieno Wasonga delivering the sermon.

Bishop Wasonga began his sermon by reflecting on the Psalms and Romans:

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18)

"Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn." (Romans 12:15)

He emphasized the collective grief felt across the nation, stating, "We are gathered here to share in the grief of the whole country."

Bishop Wasonga highlighted Raila Odinga's commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment, urging the congregation to honour his legacy by promoting these values.

"Raila was a champion of gender equality. Let us please him by electing and appointing women."

He also addressed issues of domestic violence, reflecting on Raila's advocacy against such injustices.

"Honour Raila by not beating your spouse because Raila was a crusader against gender violence."

Sharing a personal anecdote, Bishop Wasonga recalled a visit by Raila to his home in Ng'iya, where Raila expressed concern for the safety of his colleagues.

"Raila cared for the welfare of his followers. I remember he came to our home in Ng'iya. As they were leaving, he told his colleagues that they should pray for their safety."

Drawing from Ecclesiastes 8:8, he reminded the congregation of the inevitability of death and the importance of trusting in God's plan:

"No one can control the wind. We can not control death. We know death has disrupted many. But the joy is that God shall renew our strength. Let us wait upon the Lord. He is the beginner and finisher of all our affairs."

The service continues with hymns, prayers, and tributes as the nation bids farewell to a leader who profoundly impacted Kenya's political and social landscape.
