Nyeri Governor Dr Mutahi Kahiga has lauded young athletes from the county who represented Nyeri at the 10th edition of the Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association (KYISA) games held in Homa Bay County from April 13 to April 19, 2025.

Speaking during an award ceremony at the Town Hall grounds on Monday morning, Governor Kahiga praised the athletes for their resilience, talent, and dedication, noting the growing importance of sports in youth development beyond academics.

"Sports have long been overlooked in terms of funding and recognition. Yet, our youth continue to prove that talent goes beyond the classroom," said Dr Kahiga.

The governor was joined by his deputy David Kinaniri, County Executive Committee Member for Gender, Youth, Sports and Social Services Esther Ndung’u, and Chief Officer Joe Gethi, among other officials.

Nyeri County fielded a 70-member delegation competing in four(4) categories--men’s and women’s football, and men’s and women’s volleyball.

The women’s football team finished fourth, the men’s football team secured fifth place, while both volleyball teams advanced past the group stages.

“These results reflect more than skill. They speak to the players’ discipline and commitment,” the governor remarked.

He emphasized the importance of discipline, consistent training, and mental preparedness in nurturing sports talent.

“Growth in any field requires intentional effort and commitment,” he said.

Governor Kahiga reaffirmed the county’s support for young athletes, adding that the recognition was not just for their performance, but for representing Nyeri with pride and honour.

“We see their talent, we value it, and we stand with them fully,” Dr Kahiga said.

Dr Kahiga also commended the Department of Gender, Youth, Sports and Social Services for its continued efforts in youth empowerment, as well as team managers, coaches, and medical staff who ensured the teams were well-prepared.

Also present at the ceremony were County Secretary Benjamin Gachichio, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Nyeri Chairperson Chrispin Ochieng, and Acting Chairperson of the Kenya Volleyball Federation John Kinyua.
