Hundreds of football fans, journalists, and football officials among other dignitaries scampered for safety as police lobbed teargas canisters to disperse unruly football fans at Kinoru Stadium.
Ulinzi FC (Jeshi) who have decided to make Kinoru Stadium their home ground were hosting AFC Leopards popularly known as Ingwe on Sunday.
Hundreds had thronged the stadium to get a taste of the return of KPL action in Meru since facelift of the stadium.
Those in attendance had to take to their heels to scamper for safety.
The situation left several with minor injuries.
After the match unhappy fans invaded the pitch.
Ulinzi won 2-0 after two(2) quick second half goals in a span of 20 minutes, thanks to goals from Boniface Muchiri and Yakeen Mutheli.
The angry fans started the mayhem by throwing seats aiming at AFC Leopards coach Tomas Trucha.
Ingwe has been posting a series of poor results.
Leopards came intro the Sunday match after previously losing1-0 to Murang'a Seals before a 1-1 draw with Kariobangi Sharks.
The incident has left football fans and officials worried.
World football governing body FIFA can take measures for such actions.
In September, a section of Shabana fans were allegedly involved in an incident of hooliganism that saw them vandalize parts of Ulinzi Complex after an FKF Premier League clash where the teams drew 2-2.
Mr Edward Muriki, a football fan from Meru, said FKF should take stern actions against teams whose football fans cause such mayhem.
"To avoid such incidences in future, football officials should ban fans of football teams who cause mayhem and impose heavy fines on their teams as an example," Mr Muriki said.
It remains to be seen what action FKF will take.
