Police in Mombasa have apprehended Rashid Hasara, a suspect linked to a string of violent robberies and assaults in Likoni.

The arrest, made on Friday last week at Ukunda--in neighbouring Kwale County--has brought a wave of relief to residents plagued by fear.

Mr Hasara, described as a notorious figure in the area, is alleged to have participated in numerous robbery and rape incidents.

According to the Inuka Police report, he was taken into custody after an anonymous tip-off from the public.

“We are grateful to the community for their vigilance. The suspect will be presented in court today (yesterday Monday). We encourage more witnesses to come forward to aid our investigations,” said Likoni OCPD Geoffrey Ruheni.

Since his arrest, more than 10 victims have recorded statements at Inuka Police Station, detailing their harrowing experiences.

Among them is Gladys Kanini, a resident of Kona ya Zamani, Brothers Area who said that on the night of October 21, 2024, she was attacked by three(3) armed men who stole her mobile phone, two handbags, and cash.

“It was terrifying. They came out of nowhere and threatened me with pangas,” Ms Kanini recounted.

Another victim, Phidel, who lives near the suspects residences, described a brutal encounter on October 23, 2024.

“They chopped off my fingers and stole my phones and money. When I saw Mr Hasara at the police station, I could not believe it. He even apologised to me,” he said.

Mr Hasara’s has been on the radar of police since April 2022 when he was arrested for allegedly robbing a woman outside Consolata Catholic Church. Despite the charges, officers claim he managed to evade justice until now.

The police, backed by community support, are actively recovering stolen items and anticipate further arrests as the investigation continues.

“We will not rest until all those involved are brought to justice,” OCPD Ruheni assured.
