Wetang’ula urges EAC states to use Kampala Games to deepen regional integration

Kenya's Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, wants East African countries to use the ongoing Inter-Parliamentary Games to deepen regional integration as the 15th edition of the tournament gets underway in Kampala, Uganda.
The annual event, themed “Advancing Integration Through Parliamentary Sports,” runs from 6 to 16 December 2025.
Speaking during the opening ceremony at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, Mr Wetang’ula praised Uganda for hosting the Games on short notice.
"Let me remind Member States that the EAC’s founding vision included a common currency, a customs union and, ultimately, a political federation," he said.
He criticised the continued arrests of EAC citizens for lacking travel or work permits, saying such incidents weaken the spirit of integration.
He called on regional legislatures to enact laws that eliminate barriers to the free movement of people and trade.
“I pray that a political federation of the EAC comes to fruition in our lifetime. Integration is not optional. We all know that EAC countries are stronger together than apart,” he said.
He also commended Kenya for abolishing visa requirements for African nationals, noting that borders should reflect sovereignty but not restrict movement.
Uganda’s Deputy Speaker, Mr Thomas Tayebwa, echoed the call for unity, saying the Games represent more than competition.
“These Games are not just about winning trophies. They symbolise our shared commitment to unity and prosperity. We may compete as separate teams, but we must leave as one community,” he said.
This year’s tournament features teams from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and the East African Legislative Assembly.
Disciplines include men’s football, men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, netball, athletics, darts for persons with disabilities, golf and tug of war.
The Kenya women’s netball team, co-captained by Senator Beth Syengo and Ms Beatrice Adagala, played their first match against Uganda on Sunday at Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
