  • Football

Sir Keir Starmer expresses confidence in Arsenal’s chances as they host Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium before facing Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer exudes confidence that Arsenal will return to winning ways after a difficult run of fixtures in which they dropped points, including the recent home defeat to AFC Bournemouth.

Arsenal host Portuguese side Sporting CP this evening (Wednesday, April 15, 2026) at the Emirates Stadium in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final. Arsenal lead 1-0 on aggregate thanks to Kai Havertz’s stoppage-time winner in the first leg.

On Sunday, April 19, 2026, Arsenal will travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City who are only six points behind. Pressure is on Arsenal to widen the gap. Arsenal sit top on the English Preier League table with 70 points after 32 matches.

Speaking ahead of the EPL match, the Prime Minister said: “For Arsenal, we’re in a good position. It was a bit nervy — I was at the game at the weekend. The game against Manchester City next Sunday afternoon is going to be a massive game for both clubs. We’ve just got to recognise we are in a good position and go on with confidence.”

Starmer’s comments come as Arsenal look to secure a place in the Champions League semi-finals while trying to bounce back from their disappointing Premier League loss to Bournemouth.
