Parents and teachers have also called for enhanced traffic control and security measures around schools.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, together with Teachers Service Commission (TSC) chairperson Jamleck Kamau, acting TSC CEO Evaleen Mitei, and KUPPET Secretary-General Akello Misori, on Sunday visited teachers injured in a tragic accident during union elections at City Primary School, Ngara, Nairobi.
The delegation met victims receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi West Hospital and Aga Khan Hospital, offering support and reassurance to the injured and their families.
“We visited the victims of yesterday’s tragic accident,” CS Ogamba said. “We wish the injured a speedy recovery and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives.”
The accident, which occurred on Saturday, claimed two lives and left 26 others injured after a public service vehicle rammed into teachers participating in union elections.
Mr Misori described the incident as a painful reminder of the risks educators face, even while engaged in lawful union activities.
“Teachers were carrying out their duty as voters. The accident highlights the urgent need for proper safety measures around polling venues,” he said.
Dr Kamau on his part said the commission is coordinating with hospitals to ensure victims receive medical attention and counselling.
“Our priority is the wellbeing of the teachers and supporting their families in this difficult time,” he said.
Authorities have launched investigations into the circumstances of the crash, including whether the driver acted negligently and if road and traffic safety measures were adequate.
The Education Ministry and TSC have pledged to review safety protocols at all polling venues for ongoing and future teachers’ union elections.
Parents and teachers have also called for enhanced traffic control and security measures around schools during official events to prevent such tragedies in the future.
“We are committed to ensuring that teachers can exercise their rights safely,” CS Ogamba said.
