As anticipation builds for Kapsabet, AK has wished all participants well and reminded athletes to collect their bib numbers in advance.
The stage is set for an exciting weekend of athletics as 2017 World Under-18 10,000 metres race walk bronze medallist Dominic Ndigiti and reigning national cross country champion Maurine Chebor headline the third Athletics Kenya (AK) Track and Field weekend meeting at the Eliud Kipchoge Sports Complex in Kapsabet from February 26-28, 2026.
The meet will feature a full track programme, including the 100m, 200m and 400m sprints, as well as the 800m and 1,500m middle-distance races. Athletes will also compete in the 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000m, 10,000m and the 20km race walk for both men and women. Sprint hurdles (110m for men and 100m for women) are also on the schedule. Field events include the hammer throw, discus, shot put, javelin, long jump, high jump and triple jump. Prize money of Sh20,000, Sh15,000 and Sh10,000 will be awarded to the top three finishers in each event.
Chebor heads to Kapsabet aiming to regain form in the 5,000m and 10,000m after a challenging start to her 2026 season. She placed eighth in the senior women’s 10km race at the World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, USA, on January 10, clocking 33:06. The Kapsabet meet presents an opportunity for her to rebuild momentum.
Ndigiti, meanwhile, will compete in the 20km race walk as he looks to open his season strongly following a relatively quiet 2025 campaign. The experienced race walker hopes to reassert himself early in the year.
Also expected to feature prominently is world U-20 5,000m champion Andrew Alamisi, adding further depth to the competition.
The Kapsabet event will be the final open meet before AK hosts its inaugural AK Premium Track and Field Meet, an invitational competition scheduled for May 29-30, 2026. According to AK, the Premium Meet will mark the transition from open competitions to a select showcase event.
The third meet follows a competitive second weekend held at Thika Stadium from January 15-17. Veteran sprinter Millicent Ndoro won the women’s 100m in 11.3 seconds, ahead of Eunice Marandafu (11.7) and Lilian Owako (11.9). In the men’s 100m, Utawala Sprints Club claimed a clean sweep, led by Ronald Koech in 10.2 seconds, followed by Elkana Sabila (10.4) and Moses Wasike (10.6).
Teenager Mercy Chepng’eno delivered a standout double, winning the 1,500m in 4:13.8 before taking the 3,000m steeplechase in 10:28.9. Fridah Ndinda also impressed, claiming victory in the 5,000m in 16:31.9 and finishing second in the 10,000m in 34:36.0.
As anticipation builds for Kapsabet, AK has wished all participants well and reminded athletes to collect their bib numbers in advance.
Registration and issuance of running numbers will take place on Wednesday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm at the venue, with no bib collection allowed on competition days.
